Yay! A REAL! Reality Show!

So there’s this long running TV show in the US called ‘The Real World’. It’s produced by MTV and although my first impression was a BB-style setting, it’s actually not. I watched the preview on You Tube (I’m addicted to that site) and it’s quite interesting. The latest season was located in Key West and unlike BB, MTV change locations as each season progresses. Unlike BB where each year they have a 3 month holiday inside a secluded house.
Since watching the preview, it’s like a grown up version of Laguna Beach and I can see myself become engrossed in this show. Young people from diverse backgrounds live in beachy suburbs (or Vegas or the middle of nowhere) and go through life in that area. What’s quite interesting to see on the Key West season is that they survive Hurricane Katrina along with drinking and debauchery that’s expected out of the show (isn’t that the norm for every MTV show?).
On a slightly more serious note (what? Yolanda gets serious about reality TV shows?), the show touches on subjects that are ‘swept under the rug’. The 1994 season featured a gay man who was infected with the HIV/AIDS. Pedro Zamora, raised awareness about the disease and talked about it openly with his ‘housemates’. Although he died the day after the last episode from that season was broadcast, it was significant moment throughout the ‘Real World’ series.
So there are reality TV shows out there that doesn’t just talk about smut!
