Who bothers to watch Today Tonight?

Sometimes I feel like current affairs shows are biased. Okay, I can hear you screaming ‘they are biased!’ at me but I’m not really listening. As I watched tonight’s Today Tonight the absolute-oh-my-gosh! top story is how Coles is trying to take over the retail wars by building a giant Pick ‘N’ Pay Hypermarket.
So what?
Now, I may sound biased about it since I work for one of the two big names in supermarkets. I’m not gonna say who but it’s a never ending routine for TT to slam either company for buying small businesses out, or try and one up each other to get ahead of the rat race.
Now since my discipline is marketing, I’ve come up with the Coke and Pepsi concept. Let’s face it. Coles is the Pepsi in Coke and Pepsi. They keep trying to reinvent themselves, try and better Woolies. But at the end of the day, Woolies will have the upper hand cos they’ve had a more consistent strategy and haven’t really fallen flat on their face like Coles did a few years back. Sound similar?
And so what if Coles is selling crappy fruit and veg? TT will have a story to run the next night letting people who bother to watch it know where to find the best fruit and veg in their nearest city. And it can be from Coles.
TT (or even a Current Affair) nit picks like there’s no tomorrow, ripping people apart, then all of a sudden turn around and nit pick the ones who started the furore first. No wonder they ask for story ideas. They need as many issues as possible to create a story each day.
On a lighter note, Eddie’s gamble on Kylie’s TV special fell flat on their backsides. He really hasn’t done anything spectacular since getting the CEO post at Nine. Did he not know that excerpts from Kylie’s much-publicised interview were shown on other networks prior to the air date? Guess not, cos by 8.30 Monday night we were all watching repeats. What’s funny was that Nine prolly showed the entire show on A Current Affair a few hours before the actual show was to kick off. The actual interview lacked variety (the parts that I watched seeing that I’ve already seen it on Seven). And Cat Deeley didn’t do a great job. Kinda reminds of when Matt Lauer interview Britney Spears. Absolutely pointless. And BORING.
