Nine is skating on thin ice with this venture...

July 11th 2006 08:53
So tonight is the start of a new reality TV show called ‘Skating on Ice’. This show does sound awfully familiar to everyone which is true because a few years back they did another show called ‘Stars on Ice’ where D-grade ‘celebrities’ line up and perform fully sick (first time and last time you’ll read that in my blog) skating techniques in front of an moderately large audience.

I guess now Channel 9 has learnt from their last show that they need more celebrities who have made an impact in today’s media – not Reggie-like people, or off cuts from other channels because they weren’t marketable enough.

So every reality TV show needs to include a little bit of every industry. On one end we have the ‘I accidentally got famous’ pile. That would include Lara Bingle who infamously said the naughty word ‘bloody’ on TV to promote tourism. Off-topic but that word has no effect on me and I don’t think they said a bad word. Maybe they should’ve changed it to ‘where the f*** are you’ for a better viral marketing effect and Lara’s status would just skyrocket.

Back on topic another person to include in the group is Trish Broadbridge. Now I think Trish is a champ for what she’s been through (and she deserves the accolade as well cos she’s dating Ryan Filan who is hott for a TV presenter), but still, anything for the publicity. And even though she’s trying to move on from the fact that her new husband died in the tsunami, people are only going to remember her name for that moment. But out of the contenders for the show I see her as one to move far into the competition.

In another pile is the ‘I play sport so I’m trying to promote my image just in case I retire/break a leg’. We have Giaan Rooney and Michael Slater. Following my last blog about Michael’s TV effort, it probably won’t be long now before he start’s hosting ‘Family Feud’. Wait…make that ‘Slats Family Feud’. Who knows, it might happen.

Next onto the ‘I got nothing so I’ll give this a try in hope of being famous’. We got Jake Wall (Miss Universe’s handbag), Annalise Braakensiek (of Pizza fame and the odd modelling), Karl Stefanovic (in case he gets ‘boned’ by 9), Dermot Brereton (offcut from Channel 7), Jules Lund (anyone who bothers to watch Getaway), and Jackie Kelly. Okay first I thought she was a faded pop singer from the 90s. But I was wrong. She’s a pollie somewhere in Australia. But like having a staple gay guy in the BB house, you have to have your staple politician to inject some ‘working for the Government CAN be cool’ vibe in there as well.

Though as much as I slam the people involved trying to revive their careers (thanks, marketing discipline you’ve ruined every gimmick people try to sell to me), I’m sort of looking forward to it. Seeing ‘celebrities’ falling down on the ice trying to act like a hardcore skater makes us feel a bit…normal.
