Marty wins Australia's Brainiest Idol

August 21st 2006 06:57
Last night we saw a multitude of reality shows gracing prime time. Some I didn’t even know existed (like that Spicks and Specks rip off hosted by Todd McKenny).

But I DID tune into Australia’s Brainiest Idol last night – right after Girlband and before Australian Idol.

So 9 Idol contestants fronted the stage and be interrogated questions and battle their way through the 1 hour show to claim the title. Kate DeAraugo and Casey Donovan appeared and proved they weren’t very good at general knowledge questions. Okay, Lee Harding wasn’t that bright either but his role on the show was to glamourise punk rockers with his 15 minutes of airtime on the show. Then we have people who we have pretty much forgotten about like Amali Ward (plugged new album), and Hayley Jensen (plugged new album).

Although they were all playing for their favourite charities, I was quite disappointed that the more famous Idols didn’t appear. Sure, they would’ve had to decline because of other commitments, but they would’ve at least turned up to show some spirit and give their charity a much bigger plug than the losers who didn’t win but are only appearing to plug their own album releases. And to further my disappointment, Kate DeAraugo should’ve made a bigger effort instead of trying to crack jokes and not trying to answer the easiest questions.

Nevertheless maybe it was a ploy so that Kate loses and let the other Idol finalists shine later in the program. Out of all the contestants I sure didn’t expect Amali Ward to progress into the top 3. She may be a smart cookie, but I got the impression she was a bit arrogant, trying to play the ‘I’m smart but I’m gonna act dumb until the very last second and give them a correct answer but pretend that I think it’s wrong’. Even Sandra Sully picked up on her perceived dumbening (is that even a word? Lisa Simpson used it. Hmmm Word says no).

So fast forward to the final round where the contestants pick a topic and have questions fired at them. Now Marty Worrall is a bit of a larrikin and I liked how freakishly smart he was in the second round, but choosing Zoolander as his topic makes me question the credibility of show. Same with Amali choosing Alicia Keys as her topic! Sure, having a strategy of picking the easy subject that you know a lot about makes it easier to win but choosing subjects that isn't very challenging to the viewer is silly. I think the Brainiest series should have guidelines on what constitutes as a suitable topic in the final round. That way it convinces the Ten Network that what they’ve done to a show that showcases really smart Aussie kids isn’t just a blatant ploy for publicity. I’d like Anthony Callea up there to showcase his intelligence (if any, if he’s gonna go round snubbing these converted goodwill TV shows). But maybe he and the more popular Idols should make an appearance, not the C-grade ones.

It’s a good show to watch for your 'favourite celebrities' (if you can call them that cos the last few series included people I wouldn’t think of when I think Neighbours or Cricket) but I think they should keep it for the kids again just to remind us what the show is really about.

I didn't watch it but I'm also disappointed to hear that there was no Guy, Shannon or Anthony on the show. Good on Casey and Kate for making the effort though, and congrats to Marty
