Jessica or Damien who do you choose to take out this year's Idol?
November 21st 2006 01:54
So...the end of Australian Idol for 2006 is near. Who's gonna win?
Since I missed the Sunday night show I've had to download the performances myself to watch which is alright cos then you omit the responses from the judges and watch the performances!
I'm impressed that they changed the version of the winner's song to suit the styles of the 2 finalists.
Jessica Mauboy has the pop voice that is highly marketable and has the potential to reach the mass market and is favourite to win but being favourite doesn't always mean you win these days. Not that she can't take it out but 2006 is the year for originality.
Which brings me to Damien Leith (again). Quite a dark horse coming out of nowhere to reach the top 2. Sure he bombed it with the disco theme but after that he's proven he can come up with great original stuff and that falsetto is to die for. His version of the winner's song was great - a stark contrast to Jessica's pop/ballad version. It's clear that his theme is contemporary rock but can it make lots of money for the record company? Maybe.
I love them both, this year has made us stuck for choice with both equal 50/50 to take it out this year. I am however still leaning towards Damien for originality and uniqueness. But Jessica IS mass-marketable and has an equally great (if not better) vocal range that can take her places at only 16 of age.
Who bloody knows! They're both gonna make money.

I bought Guy's first album, I sold it on ebay for $8 not long after! Wasn't into it at all. But pleased he's carved a good career and shown us his true colours like Kelly.

and she doesn't have international appeal. There is a market for her talent as a 'Wedding Singer', but
the Australian public don't stand behind the winners anyway.
