My impressions of ANTM's C10 14 Finalists

March 5th 2008 02:15
I’ve watched the first 2 episodes and thank goodness, ANTM still doesn’t disappoint. This cycle, the girls move to New York and besides Paulina Porizkova replacing Twiggy, there are a couple of other changes – the intro’s been updated to show a scary-looking Tyra with blonde hair and Tyra Mail is now Tyra Ticker with the girls reading the message in unison like 5th graders reciting their multiplication tables. Oh yeah, because this cycle’s competition is so good, Ms Banks decided to bump up the finalists from 13 to 14.

So here are my impressions of the finalists so far :

Amy is a self-confessed goofball and reminds me of Lisa of Cycle 5, you know, the chick who jokingly said she was pissing in her underwear right then and there? Well, Amy has the same sense of humour when she asks the girls if they would like to look at her pubic hair. Because Amy likes to make everyone feel good. In the 2nd episode, Amy changes her name to Amis (to differentiate herself from a fellow contestant, Aimee) and shows her tendency to ramble on without a point – something Fatima (this season’s bitch, I’m guessing) naturally has to comment on. In her runway walk, her left leg seems to be slightly quicker than her right – any quicker and she’d be going down that runway in circles. In her first photo shoot, she jumps around, looking a little too happy for a homeless person. The result is a photo with Amis looking dreamily up at the light. Hmm…I’d give this girl another 5 episodes before her ‘cookiness’ drives the judges, well, crazy.

Whitney is the only plus-sized girl with one of the prettiest faces in the competition, I think – she reminds me of a young Priscilla Presley. Whitney claims that the plus-sized girls in previous shows lost their essence and their pride in their size halfway through the competition and is determined not to turn out like that. I’m sure the judges will love Whitney for the next six episodes, gushing over her pics and reiterating that the camera loves her bone structure, etc but no doubt, they will soon come up with an excuse to get rid of her. The day ANTM chooses a girl bigger than a size 0 is the day I’ll bungy jump into a pile of dog poo with a python waiting at the bottom.

Katarzyna has the type of look I wished I was born with - the bright eyes, the cute button nose…but judge & fellow Polish Paulina tells her that she has a scrunched up face (along with Marvita). But who cares? I like Kat and the way she tends to sashay down the runway like a sex kitten.

Lauren reminds me of Heather from Cycle 9 with her fish-out-of-water awkwardness. To me, her features aren’t that remarkable which makes me wonder if the judges only brought her on because they wanted someone the public could root for as the underdog. When asked by Tyra & the two Js to show them her edgy pose, she promptly gives them her back. Her make-up experience consists of smudging her eyeliner under her eyes and even in a flowing Badgley Mischka dress, she barrels down the runway like a two-year old who hasn’t yet discovered her knees with her arms sticking out behind her like fins. I can tell you this much, if I ever encountered Lauren doing her runway walk on a moonless night, I’d have nightmares.

Allison has dramatic gorgeous features with jet-black hair, pale skin, elegantly arched eyebrows and that coveted pink flush across her high cheekbones. Unfortunately, she comes across as a snob with Paulina saying Allison looks like a princess who just wants the judges to carry her Prada bag for her. Scary Jay (one with black hair) remarks that her pilates experience has made her body lopsided in her photo shoot. As dramatic as she looks speaking in front of the camera, she seems washed out in her picture.

Claire has that hairstyle I hate where it looks or is shaved on one side. But there is a classic elegance and sophistication about her and she has quickly become one of my favourites. She’s a mother and also thinks that we all should do what we can for the environment. She delivers a good photo but Scary Jay says that the pose with her hand clutching her stomach looks like she’s trying to suppress a fart.

Anya is from Hawaii but originally from Russia – please correct me if I’m wrong. I would like Anya, really I would. She reminds me of Natasha of Cycle 8 with her bright-eyed look and the way she gushes about things, even the food they’re being served. She’s just so enthusiastic and happy! But then she also reminds me of an emu with long dark blonde hair. But Tyra loves her. Tyra loves how she talks and thinks she’s the kind of girl every other girl in the competition should be nervous about. Talk about putting a red bull’s eye on the girl so soon into the competition.

Dominique – remember that scary-looking tall girl with that bandana on her head vigorously dancing the Macarena in the music video? That’s Dominique for me. While one girl in the first episode admits that Dominique is competition, another says she looks like a trannie while another says her skin looks leathery. Even Paulina bluntly tells her she looks like Robin Wright-Penn – but a transvestite version, which is the quote of the season so far for me. And you just see Dominique’s face drop. Then your face drops when you see her in the judging panel in the 2nd episode and you wonder what in the world possessed her to coil her hair up on her head like a cow just pooped on her.

Stacy-Ann looks and talks Minnie Mouse. She gave Platinum Jay a lapdance in the 1st episode and sung in a freakishly high voice, and actually does talk in a freakishly high voice. But I still like her, though I don’t think she’ll last long.

The only thing I remember about Aimee is that her Mormon mother is opposed to seeing her daughter in skimpy clothing. Aimee’s boring but the judges love her first photo shoot. Scary Jay sums it up for me when he says, approvingly, “That does NOT look like you at all” – which, when you’re boring Aimee, is a good thing.

Kim assures us that she’s down-to-earth even though people think she’s a dumb blonde. When she tells Tyra & the two Js she’s a bank teller, Tyra playfully asks, “Do you take money?” to which Kim replies without pause, “Yeah, a LOT of money.” In the judging panel in the 2nd episode, Kim tells the judges that high fashion doesn’t interest her. Amidst the gasps from everyone else in the room, Tyra ‘I-have-never-in-my-life-yell ed-at-anyone-like-this’ Banks retains her control but asks quietly, “Why did you come here?” Kim volunteers to go home and Tyra gives her a dismissive flick of her hand without the crazy eye-rolling, arm-flinging, saliva-spitting scenario of Cycle 4. To say I’m disappointed is an understatement as I anticipated Kim giving us some of the highlights of the cycle.

Marvita is a cross between Grace Jones & Mr T, and she scares the bejesus out of me. With her short black hair spiked up and her strong features, I would hate to have a run in with her in the dark – which shows that Fatima is a lot braver than I am. Marvita tends to stomp down the runway and not a good one at that, more a cross between a child chucking a tantrum and someone with a super-heavy upper body who tends to stumble forward. When Fatima confesses to the other girls she was circumcised at the age of 7, Marvita asks, matter-of-factly, “So does that make you feel any less of a woman?”

Fatima is fast becoming the resident bitch. Even though her first photo shoot was favoured by the judges with her open vulnerability, she seems to show a totally different persona to the other girls. Fatima looks like Iman and speaks like Iman but is Iman as bitchy as this? One minute, tearfully telling the judges that she doesn’t want little girls to go through what she did, the next minute, gleefully telling another African-American that she ‘sounds like ghetto’ and reminding Marvita about Paulina’s criticism of her ‘scrunched face’. And then when the others become upset with her, she says with bafflement, “I didn’t know I can actually make people that upset” and chalks it down to the other girls being intimidated by her. Hmm…when your neighbour’s small dog yaps at your ankles when you’re trying to get your mail, it’s not really intimidation you feel, is it? But then Fatima and Marvita have a heart-to-heart in which Fatima confesses she feels she has to put her guard up around people and Marvita tells her that she was abused and raped. The two have a truce which Marvita seems to think will last. But this is ANTM…

Atalya is a blank canvas. Yes, I realise that’s a good thing in the modelling industry but I’m talking about her personality. Is it possible that anyone can be more boring than Aimee? If someone asked me what memorable thing Atalya said on camera, I’d come up with a blank. Pretty name, pretty face but BORING. The judges agree with me with Paulina even saying she forgets who Atalya is as soon as she leaves the room. In her photo shoot, she shows one blank expression and the judges don’t like blanks so Atalya is booted out.

Who’s your favourite so far?
