David Tench Tonight...no thanks
August 18th 2006 05:25
As promised, today’s blog will review last night’s debut of David Tench Tonight.
It has failure written all over it.
What was supposed to be a talk show mimicking the likes of Jay Leno and David Letterman, turned out to be a bust I’m afraid.
I don’t mind the light entertainment concept (read: Rove), but David Tench’s personality really irritated me. He kept firing questions towards the guests and although they laughed off some crude comments – David asking about Pat Rafter’s parents ‘doing it’ to conceive so many children – he lacked empathy and didn’t really follow up on answers that the guests gave back. It wasn’t a very relaxed atmosphere and both the guest and the host lacked a connection.
Consequently, David has quite an ego and I wouldn’t be that interested in tuning in to see that every week. Is it just me or does conversing with an animated character with a big head scare you?
I thought half an hour for a talk show was a bit short but thankfully, for David Tench, it’s enough for a week.

i think the concept is unique and is at least trying to change things up!
i noticed the rude comments on your girlfriend blog a few days ago, while that person obviously has a few problems with opinion - i have to ask the question - is there any reality tv you actually enjoy?
you were saying how girlfriend is so yesterday etc etc - David Tench is all about today (and possibly the future) - yet still fails to draw your approval?
what would you like to see in a reality tv show? i argue that David Tench is in fact not reality television. there is no sense of panopticism that drives RTV into our faces.
i'm not having a crack or trying to flame, i enjoy your blog! but it seems as though reality television or concept television really irritates you!

To answer your question yes I do like some reality shows! I have noticed that some days my blogs are a bit of a contradiction to the blog title of 'Reality TV Fan' but I can assure you that I do like some shows!
These days I find that the industry relies too much on Reality TV as a substitute to real life stories or even talk shows like David Tench. And the twists and turns aren't as cleverly executed as the American-based versions of the shows where people are coached on how to properly deliver dialogue and increase actual suspense towards the viewer.
And yes I do agree with you that David Tench isn't much of a reality show but since it has been quite the talk if the town leading up to it, and having watched it, I felt I should comment on the show for one day and get my 2 cents in.
And to prove that I really do like some Reality TV shows, I'm mad about Laguna Beach, The Hills, and so far I'm impressed with Celebrity Survivor actually making it a real Survivor show (unless it's an excuse for everyone to lose a few kilos by not eating for a few days!). Oh and I LOVE Chaser (but it's not very real...or is it?)
I'm trying to broaden my reality TV shows in the next few months, but since I am restricted to just reality TV I'm trying to keep to that topic for now.
Thanks again for your comment and have a nice day

i work for a daily newspaper in melbourne and the entertainment writers were showered with e-mails of both love and hate for tenchy. it seems as though it's a 50/50 split. although i'd like to give it a few more weeks considering it is a real person interviewing people (with those animation patches all over his body) before giving it the yay or nay.
celebrity survivor looks like being some really great BAD tv. but who chose the celebs? famous for kissing tom williams? bobby from H&A (who hasn't aged a bit) - definately defines the term 'survivor' sheesh.
chaser is perhaps one of the greatest, innovative television shows to hit our screen since... quizmania? probably not. love chaser though, it's great!

Celebrity survivor had a low-key entrance and Dicko's dialogue was all 'bam bam bam' leaving nothing to the imagination but the public's fascination on watching 'celebrities' be put in a situation where they are not in control of makes it voyuristic viewing.
I admit I'm a sucker for typical reality shows and what I write may sound 'harsh' but it's all in good fun for me. I can't wait for Chaser tonight!

she was a moody, stuck-up bitch.
the only outcome possible with yasmin was cloning her and marrying herself.
i noticed it was meant to be renee's getting married, she pulled out. it was clear that yasmin was ch10's 'second' choice and well all found out why.
Comment by Yolanda
And like I said I hope Ten stated a limit to how much they will pay for her wedding whenever that decides to come. Buying her out by paying for her wedding shouldn't be taken lightly!

maybe there was a clause - if she doesn't marry they have to pay for her funeral?
Comment by Yolanda
She should marry the French guy, I liked his pastry skills, but a bit too emotional for my liking.

in regards to david tench i would have caught if it weren't for my tendency to indulge in the amber liquid and my constant need for partying. anways, that is an aside.
i can envision that one of the problems with this concept is the fact that the host being a computer rendered entity it would be hard to develop empathy for the character. one of the ways audiences form attachments with people is the 'humanity' for the lack of a better term of people.
audiences are able to build a relationship with television hosts for example because we tend to be familiar with their lives outside the studios somewhat and we have identification. the only upside i can see with this show is that andrew denton is involved and i shouldn't lay my boots into a show i haven't seen as yet. thursday nights makes it damn hard though.
Comment by Yolanda
I'm not usually home on Thursday nights either, but since I bailed on uni I might as well look forward to this show seeing that they totally rearranged TV for that night just to accomodate the 'next big thing in talk shows'. I would probably miss the show on a regular basis too and it needs another night if it were to attract good numbers. Then it again it did manage more than a million viewers on that night.

The basic description of David Tench Tonight does not do it justice -- this is a show of extreme originality that has to be seen to be believed. Taking the guise of a "personality" driven talkshow starring a loud and overblown Aussie TV personality that is back home after a decade in the US, David Tench is actually a detailed animated character that is even more complicated in creation than he appears to be.

Whoever speaks (Tim Ferguson??) lacks any ability to build any rapport between himself and the interviewee. The interviews with Nelly Furtado and Nick Lachey last night were cringe-worthy. Nick Lachey looked as uncomfortable as I felt.
Tench should be warm, quick-witted, cheeky and a good interviewer. He is currently the opposite of all those. Sarcasm and arrogance is OK but it needs to be part of the mix.
Possible good replacements - Peter Hellier, Richard Stubbs, Denton himself, Ross Stevenson (3AW)
Keep the show going but get rid of Tim.

You must've either read my mind or read my other blog before commenting! Nick looked really uneasy! Check it out here
