And there were three

July 1st 2008 01:18
It must be because I find the 3 remaining girls so annoying that I was torn between utter boredom and wanting to knock their heads together as I watched the 10th episode of Australia’s Next Top Model Cycle 4.

Australia's next top model
The two finalists - who will win?

The girls headed to NY where Demelza proceeded to show us her brattiness, according to the other 2 anyway, by nabbing the only room with the double bed, forcing the other 2 to share. But then when I think about it, I probably would have shoved the girls left, right and centre to do the same thing, seeing the company I’m left with – a bitch and a ditz. But my connection to D ended abruptly when she sounded like she was talking in a baby voice as she pointed out various NY landmarks.

On the go-sees with 3 agencies, Sam’s body was worshipped but her look was deemed too commercial, which hurts as much as being told you’re too short to model. D’s face was touted ‘devastatingly beautiful’ but that her 36-inch hips would haunt her, not to mention her ‘fleshy arms’. Alex impressed 2 of the agencies with her personality and bright spark in the eye (say what?) but one wasn’t too keen on her lack of eyelids. Someone pointed out that if you put D’s face on Sam’s body with Alex’s personality, you’d have one top international model. Bleh. Alex’s personality is as warm, bright and comforting as a malnourished hyena hanging around your rose bushes at night.

The girls then did a high fashion, a-la 1940s parade for Malan Breton, walking oh-so-slowy in front of a room of supposedly the who’s who of the NY fashion industry. One of the critiques, joining Jodhi Meares on the sideline, was Alice, last year’s OZ Top Model winner, looking as awkward as ever but without that vacant look in her eyes or that whiny pull to her lips.

Sam was the epitome of elegance and sophistication and I had to admit, looked the true professional. Alex looked like a baby giraffe just learning how to walk, complete with the rhythmic bob of her head and the slight flick of her heel as she struggled to walk in her shoes. Alice hit the nail on the head when she said Alex was the worst of the trio. D was….was she even there?

Next up, the girls did a shoot with Napoleon who, as he does every year, tried to get the nitty gritty of the girls’ dynamics in the hope a couple would show their claws for the sake of the cameras. You’d think these girls would learn and just shut up, but no. D confessed, literally behind Sam’s back that Sam didn’t have the confidence as the other two, while Alex was more blunt (warm personality coming through) and said that Sam deserved to be eliminated next. I know there’s such a thing as honesty but that was like sticking a knife through the chest and twisting it – ten times. Sam was understandably upset and this was when I began rooting for her. Down with the bitches!

Alex, in a ruffled off-the-shoulder white top had to pretend to be catching a cab in her shoot. If the director called for her to run after a cab while looking behind her as if she was being stalked, she succeeded. Her performance was praised by all, despite almost tripping over and the corner of the open cab door ‘stabbed’ her in the chest.

D was up next in a black & white number which did nothing for her hips so Sam, complete with an afro, was called in to lean against the cab while pretending to talk to her boyfriend on the phone in a flirtatious manner. She told us that she felt rushed and that the change totally threw her off. As a result, her poses were stiff and her pretend laugh was the prime example of why models don’t make good actresses. She added that she hated emitting a fake laugh in front of the camera while begrudging D for having a second chance. D emerged in a white dress and…oops, there goes the temporary coma again.

Before the judging panel, the girls were asked that horrible, horrible question : Why should you be a top model? And I ask ‘why?’ It’s such a stupid question and you’ll hear the same boring answers – modelling’s my life; if I become a top model, I’ll strive to be the best model I can be; I’ve learnt so much since coming here and I’ve grown and become more mature…blah blah blah.

Alex’s pic was worshipped, with the judges adding that her look suited NY. D’s face was dead, while Sam looked stiff. Who would be eliminated? I would place bets on Alex getting through first (no mention of her stiff upper lip tonight – see, NY doesn’t give a shit about what’s fake or real) with D being eliminated, simply because she hadn’t done well in the past three photo shoots.

But to my utter surprise, Sam in her ridiculously high short shorts which reminded me of those outfits my mum forced me to wear in the early 80s, was eliminated, due to her ‘commercial look’.

Pooh. So who will win this year out of the two most grating contestants on the show – a spoiled brat and a blunt, fake-lipped bitch? Hmm…tough call. Well, since the last episode, these two had been doing media rounds with D showing her claws, snipingly telling the media that Alex should be worried because of her age. And when you think about it, while D may have ‘body issues’, it’s something that can be overcome through diet and exercise while age…well…we know what happens to that one. And even though the audience has a vote on who wins, ultimately it’s the judges’ decisions. Sadly, I think D will win, but I’ll be equally as sad to see Alex come through.

HI Aimzster

I agree: Bleh. Alex’s personality is as warm, bright and comforting as a malnourished hyena hanging around your rose bushes at night.

I don't want either of them to win, but I'll be watching
