Oz Idol 08 Final 6

Australian Idol 2008 Final 6
Final 6
Last night was a tribute to the Rolling Stones and I put my money on Mark and Luke outshining the others with my two gals possibly floundering and Teale boring us yet for another week. Overall, the performances were OK but considering we’re supposed to be left with the six best singers, I found it lacking and a little…Teale-like.

Wes

A clear favourite with the judges (‘If you were to sell a record now, I would buy it’) and a favourite to win, but for the life of me, I just can’t look at Wes without thinking of blue-eyed Keith from the Partridge Family swaying his hips in his psychedelic shirt and flares while enthusiastically playing a tambourine. Granted, he does have the uncanny ability to pick a song and make it his own, be it Abba or Motown, which as Dicko keeps reminding us, is what true musicians are about. Last night, he picked Jumpin’ Jack Flash, grunting it out like Jagger would. It was good, the judges loved it – no faults whatsoever. But Wes to me, is like chocolate – satisfying without that wow factor. Like Snickers. Without nuts.

Roshani

Oh Roshani, how far you have fallen. She was my original favourite with her bubbly personality and commitment to the songs (despite one night where I had to cringe at her short purple dress and the camera angle). But the judges are spot on – what is up with the pitch? She sang a (boring) mellow rendition of Wild Horses, and she sounded like a duck who’d lost her voice at the beginning before eventually shrieking out the rest of the song. I applaud her for her commitment and despite what Kyle says, she looked good on stage but methinks the girl is trying just a little too hard now. She seems to be putting more effort into trying to belt out the high notes (hoping to get a touchdown for her efforts) than concentrating on a flawless, pitch-perfect performance. The judges hated it with Kyle saying it was a poor song choice. Can’t argue with him, really.

Luke

Not a fan of Luke, I can tell you right now. Yes, he has that down-to-earth charm about him, reminiscent of Shannon Noll. But is it me or does he always just look bored? He sang Honky Tonk Woman in his usual gravelly voice – no light shade there. It was ok. The judges liked it with Kyle rubbing it further in Roshani’s face that Luke never disappoints with his song choices and that he always picks songs that everyone knows and can relate to. Whatever. Luke doesn’t do anything for me. Maybe if he shaved that little tuft of a beard, he’ll get a reaction from me – a slight raise of the brows.

Teale

Kyle apparently gave Teale an advice during the Arias – try not to give a crap. In other words, try and lose the boy band, nice guy image and maybe people will stop putting you in the bottom 3. He sang You Can’t Always Get What You Want, opting for a more mellow rendition as he sat on a chair, playing his guitar. It was a good performance and I agree with Dicko that his voice is sounding better by the week as he seems to gain more and more confidence. He did give out one of the better performances of the night and if Teale hadn’t bored me to tears many times before, I would have applauded him.

Chrislyn

Someone should tell Chrislyn not to bounce around when she’s not singing on national TV. Really. Or remind her that the camera spans around to other contestants even when Ricki Lee is interviewing someone else so she should shy away from that pinched, grumpy look she wore while Teale was being interviewed. But anyway, onto the performance. What I love about this girl is the passion, commitment and energy she puts into each song. Singing Get Off My Cloud, you could tell she was having a lot of fun, flirting with the back up singer (former CBD band member – remember them?) and sashaying around the stage as if she already knew the judges would love it. And they did. Dicko said that when she picks the right song, she shines and that she’s a great entertainer. Chrislyn is often compared to Casey Donovan for obvious reasons but at least you can say Chrislyn has a personality.

Mark

After sulking from the Abba theme, I had turned off a little from Mark. But then he sang Angie and delivered the best performance of the night. Sitting casually on the edge of the stage and strumming his guitar, his performance was very emotive and I couldn’t take my eyes off him, although I could have done without his constant licking of his lips. It was great to see his soft but intense side and the judges absolutely loved him. Dicko, with Kyle’s encouragement, cranked up his shoulder and gave him a touchdown, which they really should leave well enough alone. I mean, there’s a bloody reason why many people were glad to see the back of Mark Holden’s goony-goo-goo head.

Who will go tonight? I think Roshani and Teale will be in the bottom 2 with Roshani to go.
