Reality TV - August 2006

WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED ON IDOL?

That FREAK named Bobby Flynn has made it through to the top 12. This has to be a joke. He creeps me out, and last night’s song choice didn’t convince me. Sure, we need a bit of variety in the bunch but HIM??? What???

Well Marcia was over the moon, I bet Mark and Kyle made a nice little mess in their pants and were glad they were sitting down at the time that happened. Bobby is quite unusual, another Jack Johnson/Pete Murray but argh…I think I’m gonna have nightmares.

Here's his initial audition tape courtesy of You Tube...

His voice is smooth, mellow, and hit the right notes. For me, it just went downhill from there. Fellow readers may disagree and think that Bobby is the bomb, but think about the themes they are going to be put through every week. Can you see him doing the following…

Dance? No.

Rock? No.

70s? Maybe. He’s got the hair so far.

80s? No.

Pop songs? Probably not.

I can see this guy tweaking any song into his own, creepy rendition that’s sure to scare the pants off me (and not in the suggestive way mind you) and avoid Idol until the day he gets voted off.

Argh, I’m getting shivers just thinking about his little performance snippet last night. Creepy as.

So tonight’s chosen 2 were quite predictable. The way Ten has marketed Jessica Mabuoy since day one was so obvious she probably didn’t need votes to get through.

Both have great voices, and what Mark said about people reworking the same old song is right. We’ve heard that Whitney song over and over again, it’s getting ridiculous.

Now for Reigan Derry, she has a fantastic singing ability but her song choice was not a very challenging song. And again (I can’t believe I’m saying this), but the judges were right saying the accompaniment was a load of bollocks. It sure was. And it was too simple to sing. Even I can sing it without fail (but you won’t see me auditioning). Let’s hope she shows us her true colours cos right now she’s being all hippie and hippiness won’t sell records to the mass market. Boho was so Sienna and we’re over that.

For the first two boys who made it into the final 12 that was also predictable too. Damien Leigh has a fantastic voice and that falsetto was bloody awesome but what is the guy’s main genre? I can’t see him doing rock, or dance. He’s more of a James Blunt boy considering his background in music for the time being.

And Dean Geyer – no surprises there. Good looks, sang last, he’ll be stuck in every tween and teen girls’ mind and vote him through. He’s odds on to win the series because of his good genes in my opinion.

Get ready to swoon girls/Source: Ten

But the whole point of this show is to find talent and good looks who can sing pop songs to sell to the mass market. So far, we’re choosing what the judges want and that can’t be a bad thing. But I sense it’ll turn dodgy very soon. Maybe I’m just tired of this Idol concept because only the ones from series 1 have lasted the distance and everyone else has just disappeared into the thin air. Am I right?

Reality TV on Ten. Seriously.

August 27th 2006 06:56
What happened to my lovely Girlband show? I just checked tonight’s TV guide and it’s not listed! Ohmigosh why not??? Did they take my comments that seriously?

Since not many of us knew the show existed (until I brought it up), this week the girls were going to finally showcase their talent in an actual show! I was hankering to see if they can sing and dance at the same time without missing a beat. But sadly, TV Guide says no – only to be replaced by another episode of the Simpsons that the timeslot definitely deserves.

Ooh! Turns out they decided to broadcast the show at 1130am on Sunday instead of 6pm. Don't they know everyone is too hungover to watch it at that time? Perhaps they are trying to target the young tween market...

Which brings me to the next planned hour of reality TV. Meerkat Manor – this is a joke right? After a few weeks of mild promotion for this show making it sound like a big deal (but I’m not buying it obviously), this show has to be a joke. Bold and the Beautiful meerkat-style? Who knew meerkats in southern Africa to have such entertaining lives than Brooke from B & B carrying on her incestuous affairs?

Anything for cheap TV I guess. But after a quick check on You Tube, it turns out the stupid voice over chick makes the show look bad. It's actually pretty decent without the awful narration from that girl. Here's the preview...

And the next show up for cancelling is It’s Me or the Dog. Anyone have any idea what this is about? Neither do I but a quick summary reveals this tantalising tale…

“In just one minute dog behaviourist Victoria Stilwell can take control of any dog and she's determined to bring even the baddest dogs back in line.”

- Australian TV Guide

Whoever wrote that copy should be shot.

And then we are finally brought back to real reality with Australian Idol. Is it just me or is Lydia Denker the same chick who sang ‘One Perfect Day’ for the movie of the same name a few years back. My…what has she done to her hair....?

I haven’t gotten a favourite just yet. I haven’t seen enough of them to make any real judgement on the actual talent that the judges have picked. Methinks the voters are gonna get it wrong this year, even after a lot of biased judging we’ll still get it wrong.

David Tench Entertains Tonight

August 24th 2006 13:00
Alright, tonight was episode two of David Tench Tonight. While in my last blog about the show I slammed it for being uninteresting as such, tonight’s show actually improved by a smidgen.

I think it really has to do with the people who are guests on the show because Nelly Furtado’s guest spot was actually entertaining. And it does help if the guest is into the show as well.
It's him again!/Source: Ten

But for David…he needs to link his questions and answers together with the guest. He’s still trying to find that one liner to market next week’s show – like the one about Lleyton being a knob. We all knew that, but David had to say it.

Nick Lachey’s segment was alright. And David was sure being cheeky mentioning the ex-wife because people are usually banned from asking questions about his and Jess’s personal life. But another reason why I’m Team Lachey – Nick took it with good humour. I think he looked a little uncomfortable in some parts of his segment though.

All in all it was an actual decent show. David needs to stop doing that moment where he leans into the camera and gives us his sub-conscious thoughts. It’s kinda scary. And for the last word on his show…leave that for Jerry Springer. It was HIS thing.

Give us your thoughts on episode two below…

So this Spicks and Specks rip off called You May Be Right (what an awful name for a show by the way) is getting killed off. Now I’m sure the 19 million people who inhabit Australia didn’t even know this show existed because only 1 million or so tuned in on its premiere night and then dropped to just under 800 000 people in its second week after a major overhaul in production.

I’m sorry but Todd McKenney, the fool he is at times (you can disagree), cannot pull off game show host personality. Leave that to Larry Emdur or John Burges. Or even Rove.

Marty wins Australia's Brainiest Idol

August 21st 2006 06:57
Last night we saw a multitude of reality shows gracing prime time. Some I didn’t even know existed (like that Spicks and Specks rip off hosted by Todd McKenny).

But I DID tune into Australia’s Brainiest Idol last night – right after Girlband and before Australian Idol.

Laguna Beach Season 3 has arrived!

Party time for Laguna's new cast/Source: Xanga
Wow. I feel so privileged to watch the first episode of Laguna Beach: Season 3. Now I have slammed this show for making it not so real this season…

But for a moment I don’t really care and I’m totally hooked.

Taking a Reality Check

August 17th 2006 13:08
Hey everyone

After a bit of unintentional keyboard warrioring last night I realised that many readers may not know who I am and what I do (other than post blogs on the Orble network that is!). I just launched straight into writing about Reality TV 3 months ago!

Who bothers to watch Girlband?

August 16th 2006 13:50
So anyone who noticed what is broadcast on Channel 10 at 6pm on Sunday nights would’ve noticed another reality show called Girlband. Hosted by the ever-excited Natalie Bassinnnnngggthwaaiaiaite (something went wrong there but meh), the show profiles a girl band (oh my, how original) forming, storming, norming, performing as a band…

…Then after all that hard work and the show is over, like FOREVER, they will adjourn and return to working in a retail chain store. Back to where they came from.

Worth the teaser campaign?/Source: Ten
Well after an intense teaser campaign by Channel 10 the time is near for David Tench to show us whether the money invested in him is actually worth it.

So starting this Thursday, David will start broadcasting his ‘talk show’ interviewing ‘celebrities’ who are in that stage of their career where exposure through any type of medium is better than no exposure.

Australian Idol 2006: Yay or Nay?

August 10th 2006 13:03
Australia Idol. Another batch of try-hards for us to endure for another year.

I just hope that those who vote this year choose someone who’s exceptional and spectacular with GOOD LOOKS. Yes, I’m pointing the finger at Casey Donovan. Sorry, but how can a girl who was barely an adult and somehow smokes cigarettes be an Idol for the youngens? I bet the voting public were all dropped on the head during the finals week that year.

Yasmin's Gotten Dumped

August 8th 2006 12:20
What was she thinking.../Source: News.com.au
Well we’ve all heard the news. Yasmin got dumped. And no, it’s not a new TV show we got going after Yasmin’s Getting Married which lasted one whole week. I bet Channel 10’s kicking themselves after their teaser campaigns and promos went down the toilet just as quickly as the show’s ratings.

The show could’ve done a bit better if they executed the live TV concept differently. One is that they didn’t do it live. Jo Stanley couldn’t pull off the reality TV host role and miserably failed to capture viewers attention. Ryan Phelan, as cute as he was, should be glad he has a sport reporting role to go back to.

Erika takes the It Takes Two crown

August 7th 2006 10:22
Now who was right about Erika Heynatz winning It Takes Two? Me, of course! And thankfully, people know how to vote this time around. Because lately, some just don’t (read: BB). And I think it’s to with pre-pubescent girls thinking Jamie is the hotness.

I knew from the start that Erika was gonna win because she had singing experience. So what? These days underdogs can win anything because they’re marketed as cute and cuddly and their ‘can do’ attitude shows that’s what the Aussie spirit is all about

Week 2 of The Steph Show

August 4th 2006 08:34
Say something nice...she looks...aged/Source: News.com.au
Stephanie McIntosh can act? Will I get the same answer when I ask if she’s good at being subtle?

If you bothered to watch the second instalment of ‘The Steph Show’, you would’ve noticed the scene where she celebrates her 21st birthday with the family. Cut to the bit after the family celebration where she makes her way over to the Park Hyatt hotel to spend the night with the boyfriend. But keeping to the G-rating she had to keep details secretive and subtle. The older kids would know what a 21 year old will get up to in a hotel room but the little ones should be shied away from this type of talk.

Another Laguna Beach Junkie Tidbit

August 3rd 2006 11:24
Bunch of posers.../Source: ONTD

Thanks to my favourite blog Oh No They Didn’t a random member posted photos and a few tidbits on the new cast of Laguna Beach. Now, I don’t really believe everything they’re saying (because yes, they do sound like they fit the stereotype and totally blew it by telling the readers that they aren’t as poor so they’re not jealous of the cast members) BUT it was a highly entertaining read nonetheless.
