Reality TV - June 2006

I’m going off a tangent here, but I feel this is considered reality TV.

Sunrise and the Today show.

It’s as real as real can be. Sure it’s scripted but these shows inform us on what’s happening in the world, encourage INTELLIGENT discussion and have a bit of fun on the side. Unlike BB which usually lacks intelligent discussion.

But lately the ratings war between these two shows is quite prominent in today’s culture especially the stories about Jessica Rowe’s job being on the line after a major battle just to get her to cross to the other side (ie defect to Channel 9). You could say the latest ratings results from both shows could end up being the top story of the day for any news channel.

As personal preference I switch to Sunrise. I guess the orangey décor and the eccentric personalities of the team gel together really well and they have consistently worked well together as a team to exude the image of what Sunrise is to the nation. And the fact that it’s so much easier to make fun of them on sketch shows which makes watching them during the 6 to 9am timeslot even more appealing than Channel 9. I mean, do you see people making fun of Jessica Rowe and Karl Stefanovic?

The battle of the breakfast morning shows reminds me of the age-old battle between Coke and Pepsi. I guess you can figure out who the underdog is. Pepsi continually reinvents themselves, add more celebrities to promote the product, chop and change, and they never seem to get it right to overtake their main competitor. Like you know who. Hehe I’ve said enough.

Besides, has anyone even dared to crash a live broadcast of Today? Not to my knowledge cos it’d sure be top new story if someone did! Look what Rove did to try and save Larry Emdur, he jumped into a cab and just made it to Martin Place in time before Sunrise finished for the day to protest. Now if Larry was still on 9 would Rove go through with it? Yes and no. I say yes because Rove would do anything to get his cute mug on TV, and no because he defected from 9 cos they didn’t like his show and managed to carve a career on Channel 10. I don’t think Channel 9 executives would be pleased (or even Eddie Maguire) that he dared to even set foot on their turf.

Oh Eddie, Eddie, Eddie, what have you done to the station? You hardly have enough experience being CEO of a major TV station yet making budget cuts and threatening staff to find a new job or they’ll be fired is the best way to get Channel 9 back on its feet? Let’s just see in 6 months time. Hey, I could be wrong. If Today manages to overtake Sunrise in the ratings war, even for just one day, I retract every bad word I said about the show.

P.S. I do have one gripe about the Sunrise show. Don’t trust the weather report -especially if you’re in Brisbane or Melbourne. Teehee.

Ashley gets the once over/Source: Southern Star Endemol
Last night Big Brother fanatics watched on the edge of their seats while Big Brother himself (I’m assuming the main one cos I reckon there’s at least 2 Big Brothers, possible three), asked housemates awfully, awfully, burning questions that fans have submitted on the official site.

While highly riveting this may sound and worth going crazy for, I however, was reading a magazine during the show and played Solitaire Showdown with friends over msn during this excitable pre-recorded broadcast.

I really don’t know how they can claim that Layered Voice Analysis (LVA) is accurate when other, more RELIABLE, sources claim that this is a load of bull. I certainly think it is ridiculous. I’ve always had the belief that the only way you can tell if someone is lying is to hook them up to a polygraph test. That way, their heartbeat, and bodily signals (working on limited knowledge here) are measured on an actual machine that is designed catch liars. Measuring the human voice isn’t accurate. It’s like me walking up to my ex with the machine and asking him if he cheated on me (well for all I know he did and if the machine said his answer ‘no’ was truthful then I’d have a dilemma to see who or what to smash up first).

All these dodgy concepts in a bid to maintain the declining ratings are annoying cos Adults Only got cut again. Adults Only was the only entertaining show out of the Big Brother franchise! I really hope the winner doesn’t get $1 million minus the remaining amount of money any money at all cos they’re all stooges. Well, except for Perry. She’s keeping them on their toes and is making entertaining TV since Rob left.

And what a champ Rob is! He shaved his locks off for charity on Rove Live. I don’t think there would be any other housemate who would dare to do that – they’re too busy being posers trying to milk it for all its worth.

Oh look…another 1 hour episode of Big Brother tonight. How…exciting.

And yeah, I’ll still watch it. Most of it. Okay…half of it.

So who is over ‘It Takes Two’? Does anyone even realise the show EXISTS?

I never knew Channel 7 could produce such riveting television on a Sunday night! I usually see that timeslot for that channel to watch documentaries or those stupid blooper shows when you got nothing else to watch on Channel 9 or 10.

I’ve never bothered to watch ‘It Takes Two’ cos I keep forgetting, it’s already painful enough to watch people who have never warbled a song in public doing it on national TV. It’s far worse than Idol! But at least we have SOME talent on Idol and the bad ones are sifted out before they can put their mugs on national television. These ‘celebrities’ that go on ITT to sing with other singing ‘celebrities’ must think they can resurrect their C-grade career (hey I’m being nice I was gonna choose D-grade) by going on a show that nobody watches?

Okay that sounds kinda biased because there are many of you who do care about the show and know that it exists and watch it like there’s no tomorrow. But still, aren’t these talentless shows a pre-requisite to be on bigger and better things? These shows (including Dancing with the Stars and similar ones) are a haven for forgotten celebrities who need some sort of income to keep their lagging careers afloat. Who remembers a story about Jade McRae who was penniless until she scored a mentor job on ‘It Takes Two’?

Even if I do remember that the show is on (but I prefer Big Brother on Sundays) I wouldn’t want to see people shredding good songs that I grew up listening to. It’s not entertaining, nor would it put me in a good mood.

I declare I will unknowingly (or knowingly) boycott Singing with the Stars – I mean ‘It Takes Two’…until it’s down to the final two. At least we’ll know the songs they sing then won’t sound like nails on a chalkboard…to a certain extent.

MTV's 'The Hills'

Clockwise from top: Audrina, Heidi, Lauren and Whitney of The Hills/Source: MTV.com
So anyone in Australia who has watched ‘Laguna Beach’ on Foxtel would know that Lauren Conrad (aka LC) has her own spin-off show called ‘The Hills’. Okay, maybe some who are hardcore fans like me who jump on MTV to read up on it - cos I had serious withdrawals when season 2 of Laguna finished.

This new show is supposedly far from the trials and tribulations LC went through after 2 seasons of Laguna Beach. Although I was watching it like a junkie (before the person who uploaded the video was silly enough to violate copyright by ripping previous seasons of LB and posting them on You Tube), I found the trials and tribulations to be exactly like Laguna. Only it was in the Hollywood Hills and has more ‘grown up’ issues. That Lauren and her good-looking rich friends are faced.

And just like LB, it’s heavily scripted. Well, the second season of LB was cos MTV got smarter and forced words in the kids’ mouths to get what they wanted from them. The Hills is no exception. It’s filmed on designated days and every week we watch Lauren suffer through the toils of working as in intern at Teen Vogue and going to FIDM (some fashion design school) – and don’t forget her cheating ex, Jason, comes back to visit while she also maintains a Hollywood social life/make red carpet appearances/catch random plane flights to deliver a dress to someone who doesn’t appreciate her doing so/play mum to her deranged housemate/and saving the world.

Okay I made up a few things. But this girl seems to do everything thanks to the kitty mummy and daddy left for her before she left for Hollywood, oh wait…The Hills.

If you watched Laguna Beach you’d know how ridiculously rich her family is. So anything she’s said about making her own money and not receiving any support is absolute bull. She’s shimmying around the streets of LA wearing designer clothing left right and centre! Why, I earn a student wage and I can also afford a Marc Jacobs dress and still have some spare change for a Chanel quilted bag as well! Yes. This is real…

It’s not on Aussie screens just yet but you can check the website out here

I’ve only seen the first and second episode so random updates about this show is going to be very limited.

Till next time...

Oh No! Rob's GOOONNNEEEE

Well, they voted Rob the dugong out. What a big mistake that was. Now all the housemates will look ugly after his departure. Of course you need your staple gay guy in the house who just happens to be a hairdresser so he can do some ‘tzuzing’ so all the housemates look hotter than they are since the day they set foot in their house. I mean if we didn’t have a Rob, Katie wouldn’t look like a Barbie doll before she left, leaving Jamie with a raging hard on cos there’d be no late-night nookie for him afterwards.

Now onto Jamie. My gosh who is sick of that ‘woe is me’ approach he’s taken since Katie left? David was right, the black armband is totally unnecessary. But I can see a part of him died since she left but hey wait a minute – she hasn’t died! Don’t you wear black armbands when someone really really ridiculously famous dies? Enough said.
